This week…helping you pick your theme & colours!
Welcome back to wedding detail Wednesday! First I am going to share a few wedding images that I was playing with recently and then we’ll walk through a couple of other steps in the planning process (with a couple of my personal tips along the way!) this week…helping you pick your theme and colours!
A couple of things that you will want to consider from the beginning are the style, colours and/or theme of your wedding (because these things will be a huge factor in many of the decisions that follow!)
A lot of people have a hard time with this because even if they have been dreaming of their wedding day for years, often the details have eluded them. If you know what you want, congrats! You are a few steps ahead! But here are a couple of tips to help you decide your theme/colours etc.
Rip up your wedding magazines!! not because of any anger issues you are having, but because its a good way to see what consitant factors come across. SO…take your wedding magazines and rip out ANYTHING you like. You don’t need to know WHY you like it, just rip it out and set it aside. You’ll need to do this with a few magazines but once you have done your ripping you will be able to group the photographs together and see what comes up.
For example you can look at all the images you ripped out of boquets… the flowers may all look completely different to you, but I would encourage you to look closer. Is there a bouquet SHAPE that is pretty consistent, or do they all incorporate one flower in some way? When you look at the venue shots you ripped out, what is consistent? Are all of the tables square, or round? Do they all have simple white designs with a splash of colour or is the decor ornate?
And usually overall you will see a consistent theme (and it may surprise you) it could be all bright blues, or a soft romantic theme, you could have pulled out all of the images with unique things you have never seen before!
Now that you have grouped the images together, get out your wedding binder and page protectors and make little collages to help you see the themes as you go further into your planning.
Another tip I have for your binder/colour selection is to make little colour pallet boards. You can get paint chips and fabric samples and put them all together on one page to be a constant reminder of the colours you are going with. That way when you are looking at invitations, and place cards and bridesmaids dresses you can pull this out and make sure they will work with your colour pallet.
Still having trouble picking your theme and colours? Think about the things that you love most about the season in which your wedding will be held?
A spring wedding? Does it make you think of tulips and regrowth? What about using tulips as your flower and pale yellow and green as your colour…
If you love lemonade in the summer you could use lemons as a centerpiece and have an old fashioned lemonade stand with daisies all around…
There are also some great wedding websites that you can search ideas by colour…so if you really love orange but aren’t sure how you can incorporate it…just google images of “orange weddings” and see what other people have done that made it work (or maybe didn’t!)
Play around and have fun with it! This is your day and you can do whatever you want! If none of these tips help you to narrow it down, thats ok, it will come to you, and if it doesn’t you may want to enlist the help of a wedding coordinator to help you put the pieces together!
Happy Planning!!!
I love the last two photos Heather! They are gorgeous!!
