I’m not 100% sure why this post didn’t come to me right away….

You see, we got cable this week. First time that we have ever had it. I got it for Alex as a Valentines gift so he could watch the Olympics and the Discovery Channel. However our first night with cable also turned into a laundry folding marathon and though I had never seen it before, I watched 6 episodes of Cake Boss back to back (and got a tonne of laundry done!)

So you would think cakes would have been on the brain…

But it was actually a suggestion from a fellow photographer that got me thinking on the cake side of things! Go figure!

I’m going to share a few images of cakes (some you may have seen before, and some you definitely have not) and then give some cake tips below. If we all make it through this without needing to get some cake…it will be a feat of pure self discipline (for me anyway!)

jg_cs_1746-copytt_mg_2258tt_mg_2264ba_ws_0016-copydetails31-copykj_dm_2073-copydetails04-copydetails01-copyDon’t they look fabulous!!! Cakes are such a beautiful addition to a wedding, and after watching Cake Boss I have more of an appreciation for the work that gets put into creating them!

The first tip that I have is from a photography standpoint (I have to get my say in somewhere right??))

Make sure you choose a great spot for your cake to be displayed :) You probably spent quite a bit of time thinking about (and a few denero paying for) your beautiful cake so don’t just stick it away in a corner without any thought. You’ll likely have cake cutting photos, and want some cool shots of your cake, but the overall appearance of those photos depends a lot on where you place your cake. Watch for elements that will distract like fire extinguishers and exit signs, as well as chairs or server stations in the background. I also recommend leaving enough space behind the table that you can semi tuck in behind the cake. That way you guys can snuggle up and your guests don’t have to struggle trying to get both you, and your cake, in their photos.

Ok onto cake basics.

You can have whatever you want! For our wedding we had a Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing. We wanted a smooth cake so they covered the cake with a layer of fondant. They can really do anything with cakes these days! (probably have been able to for a while, but I have just learned about it recently!) You can have layers be different flavors, you can serve cake as dessert or a late night snack. You can have things hand painted, hand crafted or tilted.

Cake Tips

If your bakery will deliver…have them do that! Its one less thing you have to worry about and they are used to handling this precious cargo.

To save a piece (or tier) of your cake for an anniversary, take off all the non edible decorations and freeze for a few hours uncovered (just so that the icing can harden) then wrap it in plastic wrap and foil (we’re not being environmentally friendly here) then put it in a plastic bag and squeeze out all the air. You’ll also want to put this package into a box or plastic container to protect it. Keep the cake frozen until a few days before you would like to eat it, and then let it defrost in the refrigerator.

Cake Facts:

Ever wonder WHY they do a cake cutting at weddings? It was originally designed as a symbolic gesture as the first joint task taken as husband and wife…

Ok I must say loved the cake post. Mmmmm I love cake. I think I might bake one tonight and make my special fudge icing(I highly recomend it and the recipe is on the wilton site). We have to make our own cake for our wedding due to my being a celiac (I insist on everyone eating a gluten free cake). So to make it look even better were having a part time cake designer come in to our home to help us ice the cake and my fiance is building an incredible cake stand (hes a blacksmith) so this way we dont have to worry about a tiered cake falling apart. Honestly I miss watching Ace of Cakes since me and my fiance dont have cable now that were bolth students again.
