I know this beautiful family. A generous mimi and poppa with three grown sons, all with their own beautiful families.
Did it take some work to find a date and location that would work very everyone?? Yes
But was it worth it? Also yes!
And then the question “what to wear” comes up. And though I have a big long document that goes through many details for wardrobe and prep- I won’t share this all here – but I will say why I don’t think you should go jeans and white shirts.
That was a trend that started back when families first met for outdoor photos – after studios (Where often the same thing would happen) But there are so many things that look BETTER than jeans and white shirts AND don’t take that much more coordinating.
I say pick two basic/neutral covers – and yes – they could be white navy blue (like what we did for this photos) We pulled in Tan as well to give some variety.
But then mixing it up so its not all the same top and bottom. For example one person has a white Dress and a navy blue cardigan, one with white pants and navy sweater, another with jeans and a white shirt, another with a gentle plaid pattern with the main colours.
Also sometimes for beach sessions in particular having a family of pastel colours, or all neutrals (Beige, grey, ivory and white).
I have saved some links to sample outfits to my Pinterest as well (You can click here to see some suggestions/examples)
We’ve also taken family photos where the grandparents or parents wanted no pressure at all – so they just showed up however they were and got photos that way. Though visually I would recommend coordinating outfits – I appreciate those times when people value getting the photos done “imperfectly” than not at all.
I also recommend, whenever possible, we have a familiar and meaningful location. A family cottage, favorite park, beach that you go to often…
We can always talk more about setting up a family session that works best – and I can help coordinate outfits as well!
